Prelude and Variation on ‘The Day Thou Gavest, Lord, is Ended’ for Organ — Gareth Green

This reflective work by British composer Gareth Green offers a gentle Prelude followed by a single Variation on the well-loved evening Hymn 'The Day Thou Gavest, Lord, is Ended'. It is marked Moderato, with warm clarinet and flute registrations suggested. The Variation enriches the Hymn with graceful elaborations while keeping its lyrical dignity intact. The piece closes with quiet reverence, making it ideal for church services, evening recitals, or occasions of prayerful reflection.

Why you’ll love it:

Beloved hymn – A meditative setting of 'The Day Thou Gavest', treasured for its lyrical beauty and its frequent use in evening worship, funerals, and memorial services.

Prelude with Variation – Combines a flowing Prelude with a gently ornamented Variation on the Hymn tune.

Warm registration – Suggested clarinet and flute colours create warmth and expressive contrast.

Accessible engraving – 3 pages of music notation presented within a 6-page publication, with clear registration notes.

Lower-intermediate level – Suitable for organists around UK Grade 4–5, balancing simplicity with expressive phrasing. Performance time is about 3–4 minutes.

2 Christmas Carols for Organ, Op. 11 — Egbert Juffer

This early collection by Dutch-British composer Egbert Juffer offers two imaginative settings of well-loved Carols. Written in 2018, the set includes:

Opus 11 No. 1 – 2 Variations on ‘Silent Night’: an Andante treatment in two contrasting verses, with gentle flute colours and expressive dynamics creating a tender atmosphere.

Opus 11 No. 2 – 7 Variations on ‘Joy to the World’: a vibrant sequence of short, contrasting variations ranging from playful textures to full organ splendour, culminating in an Organo Pleno finale.

Together, these Carol settings show Juffer’s flair for both lyrical expression and festive brilliance.

Why you’ll love it:

Two classic Carols re-imagined – A reflective Silent Night alongside a jubilant Joy to the World.

Variety of textures – From intimate flute stops to triumphant mixtures and reeds, ideal for contrasting liturgical moments. Silent Night is perfectly suited to quiet, contemplative service use, while Joy to the World makes a jubilant recessional or concert finale.

Practical engraving – 11 pages of music notation presented within a 14-page publication, clearly set with registration cues.

Intermediate to advanced accessibility – The Silent Night variations are approachable at UK Grade 4–5, while Joy to the World (with seven short variations and fuller textures) leans toward Grade 6. Silent Night runs about 3-3½ minutes, while Joy to the World is a larger canvas of 5–6 minutes.
