David Llewellyn Green (1935–2014) was a British composer, organist, pianist and teacher, born in Newport, Wales. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music, where he was awarded several prizes and diplomas, and later continued his academic studies as an external student, obtaining a Bachelor of Music from Durham University in 1970 and a Master of Music in Composition from the University of Bristol in 1977.
David’s professional career combined teaching, performing and composition. He began teaching in Leyton before being appointed Head of Music at Bishop Auckland Technical College, County Durham. He later lectured at Gypsy Hill Teacher Training College, Kingston Polytechnic and Kingston University, where he taught for nearly twenty years before taking early retirement.
Alongside his academic career, David was deeply involved in church and choral music. He served the Church of England as Organist of Christ Church, Lancaster Gate, and later as Organist of St Mary’s Church, Horsell. He directed choirs in London and Surrey and worked closely with organ builders, being involved in the design and installation of new instruments, including the organs at St Mary’s Church, Horsell, and St Nicholas’ Church, Compton.
Following his retirement, David remained musically active. He spent time in India establishing the Darjeeling School of Music and travelled internationally as an examiner for Trinity College of Music. Throughout his life he maintained a private teaching practice and continued to develop his work as a composer, producing a substantial catalogue of music for keyboard, voices and choirs, as well as larger-scale works including a symphony and a cantata. In later life his activities were increasingly affected by Parkinson’s disease, and he died peacefully in June 2014.
Since 2018, EJ Music Publishing Ltd. has been publishing the complete catalogue of works by David Llewellyn Green; this is an ongoing project, with works released progressively as they are prepared for publication.
