Passacaglia in D minor on a theme by Purcell, Op. 4 — Egbert Juffer

This early organ work by Dutch-British composer Egbert Juffer is a compact Passacaglia on a Theme by Purcell. Written on January 3rd, 2018, it presents a solemn ground bass that is continuously varied across the piece. Registrations progress from delicate flute colours through fuller diapason combinations to brilliant reeds and mixtures, giving the music a sense of concentrated drama. Though an early opus, it already shows Juffer’s command of Variation form and architectural pacing in miniature. By contrast, his later Passacaglia in G minor, Op. 17 expands the form into a large-scale, 14-variation work of 12–14 minutes’ duration, making this earlier piece a concise precursor.

Why you’ll love it:

Purcellian foundation – A noble ground bass adapted from Purcell underpins the structure.

Concise yet dramatic – A compact set of variations that grows in colour and intensity within a short span.

Clear layout – 3 pages of music notation presented within a 6-page publication, cleanly typeset with registration guidance.

Intermediate accessibility – Suitable for organists at UK Grade 5–6; performance time is about 3–3½ minutes, depending on tempo and pacing.

About the composer:

Egbert Juffer (b. 1991) holds multiple diplomas in composition and theory (LLCM, LVCM, AMusLCM) and has quickly earned a reputation for vibrant, audience-friendly organ works released through EJ Music Publishing Ltd.

Passacaglia in G minor, Op. 17 — Egbert Juffer

This large-scale organ work by Dutch-British composer Egbert Juffer is a dramatic Passacaglia built on a solemn ground bass. Written in 2021/2022, it was part of an exam portfolio of compositions submitted at the London College of Music, for which Egbert Juffer was awarded the Licentiate diploma in Composition in 2024. The Passacaglia in G minor opens with a grave theme (♩ = 63) and develops through 14 Variations, each prefaced by a literary quotation on the nature of music. The Variations range from intimate and lyrical to brilliant and full of colour, reaching a grand climax at the centre of the work before concluding with a quiet, chorale-like restatement of the Theme in the final Variation.

Why you’ll love it:

Expansive architecture – A full-scale Passacaglia with 14 variations, each exploring new textures and colours.

Unique literary framework – Every Variation is paired with - and represents a quotation from figures such as Mozart, Nietzsche, Bach, and Wilde, offering timeless reflections on the nature of music through the Variations.

Theme and Variations in F minor, Op. 19 — Egbert Juffer

This substantial work by Dutch-British composer Egbert Juffer is a set of 4 Variations on an original Theme in F minor. Written in July/August 2022 as part of an exam portfolio of compositions for which Egbert Juffer was awarded the Associate diploma in Composition from the Victoria College of Music and Drama, London, it opens with a sombre Theme (♩ = c. 88) followed by four contrasting Variations. Rhythmic drive, colourful harmonies, and imaginative registration changes give each variation its own character, from vigorous passagework to more lyrical and ornamented treatments. A rewarding recital piece that demonstrates variety and depth within a compact structure.

On July 11th, 2024, American organist Carson Cooman released a recording of this work as part of his ongoing online project showcasing organ repertoire by 20th- and 21st-century composers. He described it as “expressive and sombre music with a tragic/sad atmosphere. A slow, chorale-like theme is followed by four variations. Unlike most variation pieces, where the variations explore widely contrasting moods, the sad atmosphere remains throughout. Thus instead of changes of pace, the variations re-imagine the thematic material in terms of melody and texture, while keeping the mood consistent.”

Why you’ll love it:

Contrasting movements – Four Variations offer rhythmic vitality, harmonic richness and expressive variety, after a Chorale-like Theme.

Colourful registrations – Suggested combinations include Cornet V, Clarinet 8′, Röhr Schalmei 4′, Flute Harmonique 8′, Gemshorn 8′, and Vox Humana 8′, alongside strong pedal foundations.

Clear engraving – 5 pages of music notation presented within a 8-page publication, with registrations and section changes clearly marked.

Upper-intermediate to advanced level – Suitable for players around UK Grade 6–7, requiring confident technique and registration management. Performance time is about 6–7 minutes, depending on tempo and pacing.

Chorale Prelude on ‘Brunnquell aller Güter’, Op. 25 — Egbert Juffer

This contemplative Chorale Prelude by Dutch-British composer Egbert Juffer is based on the Lutheran Pentecost Chorale 'Brunnquell aller Güter'. Written on December 24th, 2024, it unfolds at a dignified Largo pace, the Chorale melody shaped in long-breathed phrases with gentle triplet motion lending a quiet ebb and flow. The right hand carries each Chorale phrase; while it rests, the accompaniment (left hand + pedal) continues, and the pedal discreetly foreshadows the next line of the melody before the right hand resumes. An ideal choice for reflective liturgical moments or as a tranquil recital interlude.

Why you’ll love it:

Subtle dialogue of voices – Right hand sings the Chorale; in the “between-phrases” spaces of the right hand, the accompaniment flows on and the pedal anticipates the next Chorale phrase by presenting the melody, creating seamless continuity and poetic suspense.

Calm, devotional character – A spacious Largo setting that lets the Chorale speak with warmth and poise.

Clear, practical registration – Suggested stops: Man. I or III Flutes 8′ 4′ 2 2/3′, Man. II Flutes 8′ 4′, Pedal Subbas 16′ & Principal 16′—simple colours that sing on many instruments.

Neat layout – 3 pages of music notation presented within a 5-page publication, with tempo and registration guidance clearly indicated.

Intermediate accessibility – Suitable for organists around UK Grade 4–5; performance time about 3½–4 minutes, depending on tempo and phrasing.

Das Blümchen Wunderhold, Opus 48 — Egbert Juffer

Das Blümchen Wunderhold, Opus 48, is an expressive German art song (Lied) by Dutch-British composer Egbert Juffer for tenor and piano, setting a poem by Gottfried August Bürger. Written in June 2024, and marked Espressivo (♩. = c. 52), the work unfolds in a gently flowing 6/8 metre, combining lyrical vocal writing with a supportive and atmospheric piano accompaniment that enhances the poetic imagery.

    Why you’ll love it:

Classic German poetry – A lyrical setting of Gottfried August Bürger’s reflective and symbolic text, reflecting on a wondrous little flower whose beauty surpasses gold, pearl, and diamond — ultimately revealing that its true “wonder-power” lies not in outward splendour but in inward virtue and modesty.

Expressive 6/8 time flow – Gentle yet expressive accompaniment supporting a warm tenor line.

Accessible engraving – 5 pages of music notation presented within an 8-page publication, clearly laid out for tenor and piano.

Emotional range – From intimate lyricism to moments of expansion, grounded in sincerity.

Recital-ready – Ideal for themed Lieder recitals exploring nature imagery, Romantic poetry, or virtue symbolism.

Advanced intermediate level – Suitable for tenors around UK Grade 6–7, requiring expressive control and dynamic nuance. Performance time approximately 2½–3 minutes.
