Giocoso for Organ — Gareth Green
This exuberant organ piece by British composer Gareth Green lives up to its title Giocoso (“playful”). Written in 2012, it is marked 'Allegro' and sparkles with rhythmic vitality, bright registrations, and lively contrapuntal interplay. Alternating textures between manuals and pedal keep the music energetic, while 'organo pleno' crowns the conclusion. Its cheerful character makes it equally suitable as a concert opener, service voluntary, or encore. Why you’ll love it:
Joyful character – A playful and sparkling organ work that lifts any programme or service.
Colourful registrations – Calls for mixtures, flutes, and reeds, culminating in a full organ finish.
Accessible engraving – 7 pages of music notation presented within a 10-page publication, clearly set with registrations.
Upper-intermediate to advanced level – Suitable for organists around UK Grade 7–8, requiring rhythmic precision and stamina. Performance time is about 4–5 minutes.
