4 Modal Interludes for Organ — David Llewellyn Green

This collection of four contrasting Interludes by British composer David Llewellyn Green (1935–2014) explores the expressive potential of the medieval church modes through concise, lyrical writing for manuals only. Optional pedal registrations and directions are provided throughout. Published in 2018 by EJ Music Publishing Ltd (catalogue no. EJMP01084), the pieces may be performed individually or as a unified suite, each with its own modal colour and character.

Hypoaeolian – Calm and reflective, marked ♩ = 63, with long, singing phrases and gentle harmonic movement.

Dorian – Flowing and rhythmically buoyant, creating forward motion through gentle movement.

Phrygian – More intense and expressive, written in a cantabile-like style with soloistic passages and rich colours.

Mixolydian – A lively and conclusion, beginning restrained with a single melody over a double drone, gradually increasing its energy through gradually opening the swellbox, an added counter melody and rhythmic design of the drone.

Together, these four Interludes form an appealing cycle of modal reflections suitable for liturgical use, teaching, or contemplative performance.

Why you’ll love it:

Distinct modal colours – Four pieces exploring the 'Hypoaeolian, Dorian, Phrygian, and Mixolydian modes, each with a unique atmosphere.

Manuals only – Ideal for smaller instruments or organists without pedal technique.

Expressive range – From quiet reflection to rhythmic vitality and bright modal clarity.

Accessible engraving – 9 pages of music notation within a 12-page publication, clearly typeset with registration suggestions.

Lower-intermediate to intermediate level – Suitable for organists around UK Grade 4–5; total performance time approximately 8-10 minutes.
